ACET's English Language Trivia!!

Have you ever heard the phrase, “the black sheep of the family” and wondered what it meant?

Well the phrase refers to somebody who is regarded as a little “different” ( 🙂 ) and stand out from the rest of their family, whether it is because they look different, act differently or have very different interests.
It’s not clear as to why the phrase has acquired a negative connotation but it is sometimes thought to be because we often link black things with bad things, for example black mood, black looks etc. It may also be because shepherds disliked black sheep as their fleeces weren’t suitable for dying and so were worth less than those of white sheep!
Have you every been called a black sheep? Or do you think you black sheep could refer to you? Why not tell us why and what makes you unique!?
