Using Past Tenses
Past Simple
We use the past tense to talk about:
• something that happened once in the past: I met my husband in 2015.
• something that happened several times in the past: We ran everyday while we were on holiday.
• something that was true for some time in the past: He enjoyed being a student.
• we often use expressions with ago with the past simple: I met my husband a long time ago.
Most simple past tense verbs are, like “enjoy,” formed by adding “-ed” to the end of a base verb. However, you need to learn the irregular verbs that don’t fit this pattern, such as “meet” (simple past tense = met).
