Using Past Tenses

Past Continuous

We use the past continuous to talk about something in the past:
which happened before and after another action:

• The boys were watching tv when I got home.
which happened before and after a specific time:

• It was eight o’clock and I was writing a letter.
which continued for some time:

• Everyone was shouting.
which happened again and again:

• They were always arguing.
with verbs which show change or growth:

• Her English was improving.
